AN AMAZING ORIGINAL MUSICAL EXPERIENCE DEPICTING THE JOURNEY OF A FEMALE LATINA FACING HER DEMONS, FINDING HER TRUE SELF, AND BEING FREE!
I, Diana Sophia, have been described as Amy Lee meets Sia. At age 18, I ran away from a toxic home environment writing and music were the healing power from which I recovered my voice and self-expression. My artistic voice and freedom were found in New York City, where I began to perform my original music as a way to release my emotional and theatrical storytelling in both English and Spanish.
A Mexican Free Holy! is a rock opera that took several years in the making. In the beginning, it was a music project that included cover songs and not my original music because, for a strange reason, I was resistant to sharing my music with the world. However, life got in the way and didn’t let me finish the project with the idea of cover songs, and instead pushed me to keep writing original songs. After a few years of constant struggle as a female minority all by herself in New York, and rejecting my artistic call, I finally reconciled with my singer-songwriter path and embraced the opportunity to create “A Mexican Free Holy!” using my original music. Today, I am happy to share it with you!
A Mexican Free Holy! was created, directed, produced, and performed by me, Diana Sophia. The 12 steps of “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell, which is a template of stories that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis and comes home changed or transformed, inspired me to portray part of my journey as an individual who left everything behind to change her life.
“I really enjoyed the show “A Mexican Free Holy!”. I loved to see visual elements of Mexican culture on stage, and the live music was fenomenal! It was very interesting to know more about the story a female when she leaves her country behind to come to NY. I truly recommend this show!”
“Man, this show blew my mind! I was not expecting this, but I loved the combination of artistic elements and the band playing live! Diana added visuals that made me feel like I was traveling from Mexico to New York. The show’s message is powerful and inspiring. Diana Sophia’s vocals reminded me of Amy Lee from “Evanescence”. I didn’t know her, and I truly loved her artistry. I recommend everybody to see the show!“
